The wording of a wedding invitation does three jobs: it blesses the occasion, tells guests who is getting married, and gives them every function with date, time and venue. The style differs by family and region, but the order is almost always the same. Below you will find that order, then wording you can copy in Hindi, Gujarati and English, plus a WhatsApp message to send with the card or video.
Change the names, dates and places, keep what suits your family and drop the rest. All samples use the same made-up couple, Rahul and Priya, getting married on Saturday, 12 December 2026.
The usual order of an Indian wedding invitation
- Invocation — Shree Ganeshay Namah, a shloka, or your family’s blessing (Bismillah, Ik Onkar, a cross, Jai Jinendra).
- The invitation line — “you and your family are cordially invited”.
- The couple — the groom and bride with their parents’ names (and often grandparents’).
- The functions — one line or one scene per function: date, day, time, venue.
- The inviting family — nimantrak, swagatotsuk, darshanabhilashi: the people who invite and wait to welcome you.
- The children’s line — bal manuhar in Hindi, tahuko in Gujarati. Optional, and charming.
- Contact / RSVP — a phone number, and on WhatsApp the map links.
In a video invite, each of these becomes a scene: the invocation opens, the couple follows, every function gets its own few seconds, and the inviting family closes.

Gujarati kankotri wording (lagna patrika)
A Gujarati kankotri has its own rhythm: the invocation, the shubh lagna line with both families, then a list of prasang (functions), the nimantrak and swagat utsuk names, and often a tahuko from the children.

Wording tips
- Check every name with the person. Spellings of names and surnames vary within the same family.
- Keep honorifics consistent. If one side gets “Shri” and “Shrimati”, the other side should too.
- Write dates with the day. “Shanivar, 12 December 2026” or “શનિવાર, તા. 12-12-2026”.
- Use one language per line. Mixing scripts in a single line is hard to read on a phone; mixing languages across lines is fine.
- Ask an elder about the shloka and the family deity before you finalise — it matters to them.
